HMI alumni & friends – are you looking for a career change and do you want to be HMI’s next Director of Admissions? Seriously! We are currently hiring for this position and I believe that anyone who knows HMI and cares deeply about this place could thrive in the role. You do not need previous admissions or even school experience. In my book, a strong applicant:
- Loves HMI and the unique type of education we offer
- Has some sort of experience in sales/marketing/recruiting/PR/etc.
- Is excited about living in a beautiful mountain town–balanced out with travel to big cities all around the country
That’s it. When I moved to Leadville in 2015 to take this job, I had never worked in a school setting. I was coming off a chapter as an entrepreneur and professional New York City tour guide. I knew that HMI had been life-changing for me, and I wanted to help make the experience possible for other people. Eight years later when I finally moved on, I had enrolled nearly 1,000 students, each of whom had given up their cell phone, immersed themselves in nature, and grown tremendously. Like a proud parent, I watched these young people flourish in the quirky, intentional community that is HMI.
HMI admissions isn’t rocket science. It’s simply getting the word out. Our biggest recruiting obstacle isn’t that students decide NOT to come to HMI. It’s that most students and families have never even heard of the concept of studying away in high school. A successful admissions director is a believer in experiential education who shouts it from the mountaintops.
