HMI Strategic Priorities: 2024-2026

Approved by the Board of Trustees in 2024

HMI’s 2019 Strategic Plan continues to successfully guide the school’s goals with intention and structure. Recognizing that much has changed in the world and the educational arena since the Board finalized this document, in 2024 the Board identified certain strategic priorities that are of particular importance for HMI’s work in the coming years. This document reflects those current priorities within our overall strategic plan.

Strategic Plan Goals:

CURRENT SPECIFIC PRIORITIES:

  • Ensure all students have excellent and comparable experiences, including those from traditionally underrepresented populations at HMI.
  • Attract and retain a diverse community of employees, apprentices, and board members, especially in terms of racial and ethnic diversity.
  • Increase economic diversity of the student body, first and foremost in the HMI Semester, including through fundraising efforts specifically focused on the DEI goal.
  • Integrate co-curricular DEI work into all HMI programs, focusing on students’ experience outside the classroom as well as in the classroom.

CURRENT SPECIFIC PRIORITIES:

  • Encourage employee retention through review and updating of compensation and benefits packages.
  • Evaluate employee needs for effective support on an ongoing basis, recognizing changing needs.  Implement holistic supports, including evaluation of staffing models and other elements of employee experience.

CURRENT SPECIFIC PRIORITIES:

  • Develop criteria to evaluate HMI’s program mix, both current programs and new opportunities.  Define how different programs support one another in terms of mission alignment, financial promise, and fit with the school’s strategic needs.  
  • Continue to analyze and decide on the right enrollment size for each program.
  • Ensure continued financial sustainability in an uncertain and dynamic economic environment.

CURRENT SPECIFIC PRIORITIES:

  • Bolster our alumni outreach in an intentional way, to continue building support for HMI and telling the HMI story.
  • Develop mechanisms for demonstrating the transference of skills learned at HMI and the impact of HMI programs on alumni careers, personal growth, knowledge, and inspiration.
