Fall Rock '23
Our third and final domestic expedition began with the second backpacking experience of the section. Logistically, our experience was similar to the first, but the environment couldn’t have been more different from the jagged peaks of the Sawatch. Canyons and mesas littered the red ground as far as our eyes could see. We spent three days exploring the area surrounding Jacob’s Chair, hiking in canyons, climbing mesas, and learning about desert ecology. Our fourth and final night was spent sleeping under the stars on a slick rock bench in the canyons.
We then transitioned to Moab, celebrating the birthdays of two group members, Anton and Anna, along the way! Ten days of blue skies and easy access to climbing meant swift progression and the constant achievement of both personal and group goals. Despite our expedition setting, we didn’t forget to celebrate Halloween! Thrifted costumes and hours of bouldering filled our afternoon on the 31st. We sadly said goodbye to Moab after several more days of hard trad and lead climbing.
Now back in Leadville, at the beautiful HMI campus, we are eagerly preparing for our time down south in Chile!
