Alumni Spotlight: Road to The Appalachian Trail

My name is Ryder Pond, and I am a 17-year-old from North Carolina who recently graduated from high school. I attended the High Mountain Institute (HMI) during Semester 47. Now, I’m excited to take on the challenge of thru hiking the Appalachian Trail.

The Appalachian Trail is a 2,190-mile footpath that runs through 14 eastern states from Georgia to Maine. It’s a formidable challenge that typically takes hikers five to seven months to complete. However, I plan to take on this challenge before starting college in Colorado, aiming to complete the trail in just four months.

The trail itself is full of challenges and rewards. It takes hikers through diverse terrain, including dense forests, rocky ridges, and high peaks. The trail is marked by white blazes, which guide hikers along the route. Along the way, I’ll be camping, resupplying, and meeting fellow hikers who share my passion for the outdoors. Thru hiking the Appalachian Trail has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. I’ve spent my entire life exploring the Appalachian Mountains and developing a deep appreciation for the natural world. Thru hiking the trail is the ultimate expression of that love and appreciation.
