The High Mountain Institute is seeking a Director of Admissions & Financial Aid, a full-time administrative, FLSA-exempt position, starting in Summer 2026. This position is based on HMI’s campus in Leadville, CO; on-campus housing is included in the compensation package. Reporting to the Head of School, the Director is responsible for overseeing all marketing, recruiting, admissions, and financial aid initiatives for the school in order to maximize enrollment and meet strategic enrollment priorities. The Director serves as a senior school leader and supervises two or more associates. 

The ideal candidate will have previous marketing and/or admissions experience, preferably in an educational or non-profit setting. The candidate will be a strong communicator and public speaker, an innovative storyteller, and have an eye for design. The candidate will be passionate about increasing diversity and access in the independent school and outdoor recreation industries, and be a champion of equity in the school’s admissions, marketing, and enrollment efforts. 

Primary Job Responsibilities:

Admissions and Financial Aid

  • Oversee all admissions and financial aid initiatives for the HMI Semester, Summer Term, Gap, and short programs
  • Maintain and develop relationships with contacts at sending schools, summer camps, and educational non-profits; introduce HMI to new schools and administrators
  • Cultivate relationships with parents and students that lead to applications
  • Travel for 5-10 weeks per year for admissions and create promotion & travel schedules for the admissions team (100+ school visits, evening presentations, administrative visits, virtual events, etc.)
  • Advance initiatives to increase diversity in the student body
  • Collaborate with HMI’s alumni and parent community to engage prospective students and families
  • Manage and improve HMI’s website; oversee HMI digital marketing efforts via digital ads, social media, and professional videos
  • Make and communicate admissions and financial aid decisions for all HMI programs
  • Serve as an advocate for students and families receiving financial aid 

Other

  • Serve as a member of HMI’s administrative team and fulfill administrative responsibilities, including serving as an Administrator on Call.
  • Supervise two full-time associates
  • Opportunity to lead backpacking trips, gain wilderness medicine certifications, and engage with students as appropriate
  • 10% of every position is doing whatever needs to be done at HMI

Minimum Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BA/BS, 2+ years of admissions and/or marketing work, preferably in an educational or non-profit setting
  • Experience in an independent school, outdoor program, or summer camp setting
  • Experience with web design, graphic design, and online marketing tools 
  • Experience with enrollment management tools (specifically Finalsite and Clarity) 
  • Experience with database/CRM systems (specifically Salesforce) 
  • Experience supervising and managing personnel
  • Experience advocating for and supporting equity and inclusion efforts within an organization

Physical Requirements: Ability to travel independently around the country (in planes, trains, rental cars, etc), ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Start Date: Summer 2026 (exact start date flexible)

The High Mountain Institute is seeking a History Faculty Member, a full-time teaching opportunity at the High Mountain Institute. This position is based on HMI’s campus in Leadville, CO; on-campus housing is included in the compensation package. Reporting to the Director of Academics and Faculty, responsibilities include teaching United States history classes, leading extended wilderness expeditions, and various residential life duties.

The ideal job candidate has prior experience in classroom teaching, wilderness instruction, and participation in a residential life environment.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Teach 3-4 sections of United States history (both AP and non-AP) each semester
  • Lead 4-5 student wilderness expeditions and serve in an emergency support capacity for semester expeditions
  • Mentor a history apprentice each semester
  • Participate in overnight residential life responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in history or a related field
  • Prior high school teaching experience, United States history preferred
  • A demonstrated commitment to principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Enthusiasm for working with teenagers in a residential setting
  • Current WFR or higher, or ability to obtain such certifications
  • Legal work authorization in the United States
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check

The High Mountain Institute is seeking a Kitchen and Wilderness Fellow, a 10 month fellowship in the HMI Semester and Gap Programs. The ideal job candidate would be interested in developing skills in the areas of food service, wilderness instruction, and education. Responsibilities include on-campus food service, expedition rationing, menu planning, food ordering, budgeting, training others, kitchen curriculum development, leading extended wilderness expeditions, and various residential life duties. 

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Work with HMI’s kitchen manager and help support a commercial kitchen that serves 65-85 individuals (an average of 2.5 days a week in the kitchen). 
  • Prepare healthy food from scratch that meets our mission of “Simple in Means, Rich in Ends.”
  • Accommodate a variety of dietary preferences and food allergies.
  • Run a rations room that supports student expedition group food preparation (an average of 1.5 days a week).
  • Supervise apprentice and student cook crews and provide relevant instruction in food preparation, meal planning, and kitchen safety.
  • Instruct and support on two student wilderness expeditions (one per semester)
  • Serve as Expedition Runner on two Semester wilderness expeditions
  • Various residential life responsibilities (an average of 8 hours a week). 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • BA/BS
  • Prior backcountry wilderness experience
  • Ability to backpack for 10-18 days at a time
  • Legal work authorization in the United States
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check

Suggested Qualifications:

  • Interest in food service, specifically cooking homemade, nutritious, and delicious meals for large groups.
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills, including multi-tasking and delegating 
  • Computer Skills (Google Suite)
  • Experience working with high school students
  • Passion for the outdoors and education
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule; intensive on then off schedule – vacations to be scheduled during program breaks
